An engagement session is often one of the first opportunities to slow down and document this season of your relationship before the rhythm of the wedding day begins.

While it naturally creates beautiful imagery for save the dates, wedding websites, and printed details along the way, its value extends far beyond the photographs themselves. More than anything, it creates space. Space to settle into the experience, to become comfortable in front of the camera, and to begin building trust with the person documenting one of the most meaningful chapters of your life.

Is an Engagement Session Right for you?

For most couples, the wedding day is their first experience being professionally photographed together. An engagement session offers a gentler beginning.

Without the structure or time constraints of a wedding day, there is room to move more freely, to discover what feels natural, and to become familiar with the rhythm of being photographed. It allows us to build a foundation together, so that by the time your wedding arrives, the process feels familiar rather than unfamiliar.

That familiarity changes everything.

It allows you to be more present, more relaxed, and more connected to one another rather than focused on the camera itself. The result is imagery that feels effortless, honest, and deeply reflective of who you are together.

And beyond the practical value, there is something worth preserving about this particular season.

Engagement exists in its own space. A season of anticipation, transition, and becoming. It deserves to be remembered for what it is, not simply as a stepping stone to the wedding day.

When deciding whether an engagement session is right for you, I often encourage couples to think about the experience as much as the images.

For your Consideration

Setting plays an important role.

A garden in spring, the coast in late summer, the quiet streets of a city at sunrise, or an estate rich with history all create a different atmosphere and shape the feeling of the session. Choosing a location and season that reflect your personalities, or even complement the tone of your wedding celebration, can make the experience feel even more cohesive.

And then, of course, there is what to wear.

The most timeless guidance is also the simplest: wear what feels like you, just elevated.

Choose pieces that feel comfortable, flattering, and natural to move in. Confidence translates beautifully on camera, and comfort allows you to stay present in the moment rather than adjusting to something unfamiliar.

I always recommend considering your setting when selecting wardrobe. Soft neutrals, thoughtful textures, and well-tailored silhouettes tend to photograph beautifully and allow the focus to remain where it belongs: on your connection.

Rather than matching exactly, aim for harmony. Colors, tones, and formality of dress code should complement one another, creating a sense of cohesion without feeling overly coordinated.

And as with every detail, polish matters. Well-fitted clothing, thoughtful shoes, and attention to the final details can elevate the entire visual story.

At its core, an engagement session is not about perfect poses or performance. It’s about creating something honest together before the wedding day arrives.

A chance to slow down. To celebrate this chapter. To step into the experience before the celebration begins.

And for many couples, that beginning becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the story.

Considering an engagement session in Paris, along the New England coast, or somewhere meaningful to your story? I’d love to help shape an experience that feels personal to you.
